I played against Von Joshua in Oakland's Young America and Babe Ruth, and always admired his hitting skills and speed. I, finally, played with him on E. Bercovich in 1966. The legendary George Powles was our coach. We won our league easily, but got stopped unexpectedly at regionals in Fresno. The 105 degree heat killed us!
Von is now batting coach with the Cubs. Some of our teammates were John Burnett (played in Cubs organization), Gary Cortepossi (played in the Colt 45's minors), Bruce Roberts, Al Fenchel (played minor leagues), Mike Parker (Yanks). We used to beat Bill Irwin (Also sponsered by Bercovich) all of the time in practice at Bushrod Park. Bill Irwin won the American Legion national championship that year.

Hudson, great to hear from you. Thank you for sharing your story with us. I will put you, and some of the other names you mentioned, on the 1966 E Bercovich roster.

If you have any news articles or pictures that you'd like to share, let me know. I would love to be able to share them with everyone here.

Best regards,
Jim Cruff

Thanks, Jimbo

This was my first chance to play for George Powles. He led E.Bercovich-Bill Irwin American Legion to back to back world championships in 1949-1950, I believe. He was very influential in the development of such great Oakland ballplayers as Frank Robinson, Vada Pinson, J. W. Porter, Curt Flood and many others.
E. Bercovich Connie Mack of 1966 was made up of the best players from Skyline High, Oakland High and Bishop O'Dowd.
I still have my uniform top after all of these years. I'll try to take a photo of it and pass it on.
During the winters, I played for Acme Carpeting and later Lovier's Furniture in the Alameda Winter League. Many of my teammates from Bercovich joined me for some good baseball. Willie Stargell, Tommy Harper, Ernie Fazio, Billy Williams and other greats would play at times, either for teams or benefit games.

Best regards, Hud Winslow
